CHEMORESIN lab flooring with explosion protection

Hard-wearing floor coating at chemical company "Karl Bucher".

Assignment and requirements

Laboratories often place high demands on the chemical resistance of a floor coating. In the lab of company “Karl Bucher”, a conductive version with explosion protection was also required to meet safety standards for the protection of sensitive equipment.

Particularities and challenges

The KLB brand CHEMORESIN stands for extraordinarily robust coverings that can withstand the highest chemical, thermal or mechanical loads. Such CHEMORESIN floorings can also be made conductive, as was required for this project.

Thanks to the high mechanical load-bearing capacity and robustness of CHEMORESIN, the floor prevents damage caused by falling objects. The non-slip surface contributes to occupational safety, while the jointless installation provides a hygienic and easy-to-clean surface.

The solution

The flooring system used was specifically tailored to the project’s requirements: it consists of a primer and scratch coat using KLB-SYSTEM EPOXID EP 57, a copper tape KLB-Kupferband as well as a conductive layer on top with KLB-SYSTEM EPOXID EP 799 Ableitgrund. This was followed by the coating KLB-SYSTEM CHEMORESIN CR 920, scattered with silicium carbide KLB-Siliciumcarbid 0.3/0.8 mm, and a sealing layer with the same CR 920.

This build-up offers a high level of chemical resistance, especially against aggressive solvents such as tetrahydrofuran. In addition, the conductive setting minimises the risk of sparks caused by electrostatic discharges, which is of paramount importance in this potentially explosive environment.
