Pfaffenhausen Fire Station – robust surface protection for operational deployment
K7 KLB PARKING EP OS 8 Flex system for permanently stressed vehicle and functional areas.
Assignment and requirements
During the construction of the new fire station in Pfaffenhausen, around 600 m² of floor area in the vehicle hall, changing rooms, and hose washing bay was to be coated. The surfaces are exposed to high mechanical loads from fire service vehicles as well as chemical exposure from operating fluids, extinguishing agents, and cleaning chemicals.
What was required was a robust, slip-resistant, and easy-to-clean surface that reliably protects the floor. In addition, the floor was to be installed barrier-free and meet the requirements for sustainable construction according to DGNB.
Particularities and challenges
One requirement was the thermally activated floor slab. To avoid moisture build-up, a water-vapour-permeable system was required. At the same time, the build-up had to bridge possible movements in the substrate and protect the concrete surface liquid-tight against media acting from above.
The different functional areas as well as the regular stress from around 50 to 60 fire service deployments per year also placed high demands on the load-bearing capacity, safety, and ease of maintenance of the floor covering.
The solution
The system K7 KLB PARKING EP OS 8 Flex was used. The surface protection system, originally developed for underground car parks, is also suitable for vehicle and functional areas indoors. Its vapour-permeable and crack-bridging build-up is optimally matched to the thermally activated floor slab.
The primer with KLB-SYSTEM EPOXID EP 5520, the flexible wearing layer of KLB-SYSTEM EPOXID EP 5590, and the top sealer with KLB-SYSTEM EPOXID EP 5570 form an abrasion-resistant, slip-resistant, and liquid-tight surface. It protects the concrete from damaging substances and provides a load-bearing and easy-to-clean floor for the reliable operation of the fire station.
The system meets the requirements of quality level 4 according to line 24 of the DGNB criteria matrix and thus supports the minimisation of solvent emissions.
